The term scrum comes from the terms scrummage or scrimmage in which an ordered formation of Rugby players starts a game. The forwards and team members of each team form up with arms interlocked and heads down. They push against a similar group from the opposing side. The ball is thrown into the scrum, and the players try to gain possession by kicking it toward their side.
Overall, the format follows an agile model as it operates in fits-&-starts, as compared with a waterfall model which is continuous.
Benefits: When faced with a complex project or product-development effort, scrum improves teamwork, communication, and speed.
