I began my career in web developer and internet technology as a freelancer designing sites for small business.  I transitioned to running my own web development business and now I work as a Sr. Manager helping large businesses address their online initiatives.  It is interesting to reflect on how small businesses view their website requirements and risks as compared to large organizations.  If I had to call out one characteristic for new developers to separate themselves from the pack as they strive for a career in online development, it is to 'continue learning and build context on internet innovations and trends so as not to be content with where you are today'.  This is an evolving space and technology changes fast.  You have to be aware of what capabilities are available to you to directly address business benefits/initiatives your customers may be concerned about including page speeds, web security, mobile users, responsive design, personalization, etc.

My last bit of advice is it is equally important to maintain a steady cadence of communication with your clients AFTER you completed a job for them.  Build in quarterly checkpoints to review value confirmation and KPI reports.  Demo to them how the technology you developed is helping the business and speak to them about trends you are seeing to plant seeds for future work.  It is easier to organically create new opportunity from within your existing client base than it is to find new customers so always maintain a correspondence and become their trusted advisor vs a simple vendor that is only called upon when they are drafting a RFP.

The stated gaps in soft skills may influence hiring practices in the future: think about the number of customer service rating systems available to online users and customers.
