Tina Donvito, in her June 5, 2017 article in Reader’s Digest entitled Soft Skills Make Candidates Stand Out, observed that recruiters always assess if a job applicant has the right tools to do the job. But relevant tools have expanded drastically to include soft skills. She cited a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers which reported that 78% of employers look for candidates who can work well in a team, making it the most desired skill in the report.
In addition, employers are looking for candidates who are open, available, empathetic, and relatable. Michelle Lederman, author of The 11 Laws of Likability, says that authenticity is a pillar of trust. This is not about being weak, but is about being open and sharing what it means to be human.
