How many rights equal a wrong? What’s the ratio of micro-affirmations to micro-aggressions?
In the training andragogy of micro-behaviors, there are micro-aggressions and micro-affirmations. According to the psychiatrist, Chester Pierce, a micro-aggression is an unconscious verbal, non-verbal, or environmental slight, snub, or insult targeted at a person of an ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
Conversely, micro-affirmations are conscious actions that make people feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged, such as nodding while a person speaks, encouraging someone to contribute, and complimenting insightful observations.
Successful trainers understand that micro-affirmations promote understanding, application, and retention of intended learning. Micro-aggresions undo that. Successful trainers accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, to borrow an old phrase.
